Arguably the most famous dog in the world!
You're probably thinking "what does this dude want to say about German shepherds that I don't know!" .. The problem is I don't know how much knowledge you have, but I'll try to include some disadvantages of GSDS and hope that you'll gain something new!

Oooooook! Let's stop rambling and get down to basic facts about the German shepherd!

    AVERAGE LIFE SPAN
Minimum life expectancy - 10 years
Maximum life expectancy - 12 years

    AVERAGE WEIGHT AND HEIGHT
I'll use KG as the weight unit because we hardly use pounds here!
    Its weight ranges from 34-43kg

    TEMPERAMENT
    1. Aggressive
slightly aggressive to strangers and extremely possessive of its owner and will protect its owner till death! This breed must be well socialised!

    2. Alert
Very alert! I mean look at the size of its ears, if it's not alert, what are the ears meant for then?

    3. Gentle
Very gentle, shows little/no aggression against its owner!

    4. Intelligent
one of the most intelligent dog breeds around, I know oluomoadebayo would come and say that the malinois is more intelligent but meh, it's my article :)

    5. Loyal
    6. Out-Going
    7. Protective
    8. Quiet : I'll be sincere, German shepherds around my residence are very noisy! They can shout for Africa! But as they attain maturity, they tend to get quiet and stop barking frequently!

    - Frequent barking, especially when young
-Good with your kids especially when it's raised in the presence of kids!

Author's Note : My hand hurts, typing with a mobile phone is really stressful...lol.. I'll continue later.

Since we've glossed over the main points, let's twist this and jump over to the disadvantages of this dog breed!
    :)

    1. Health problems.
Contrary to popular belief, the German shepherd are not disease free! In fact, they're more prone to disease than other big dogs like rottweilers and boerboels. German Shepherds, like any large breed, are prone to canine hip dysplasia, a crippling and potentially fatal disease. (hip replacement surgeries are very expensive and not readily available in this part of the world) slant back German shepherds are more prone to this disease because or their hind legs, many slant backs experience discomfort as they grow older!
possible complications lead many people to the decision of having the dog humanely put down(which is a very difficult decision especially if you're emotionally attached to your dog)

The breed also struggles with or is prone to elbow dysplasia, allergies, cleft palate, degenerative myelopathy, perianal fistulas, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, bloat, panostetis, Von Wildebrand’s disease, Wobbler’s Syndrome, heart and skin disease and thyroid disease.
NOTE : these are common diseases and the ones which I have knowledge of, the diseases are not limited to the ones I mentioned, there are varieties of diseases that can plague German shepherd

    SHEDDING!
If you're considering keeping your dog indoor, you should note that the German shepherd sheds heavily(all year round), and to the best of my knowledge, it sheds its thick undercoat twice a year. I know that most people won't be happy seeing pet furs all around their house!

    SOCIALISATION
All dogs needs to be socialised at an early age, but with the German shepherds, it's an absolute necessity! Most people keep their dog away from socialisation with the false hope that it would make the dog a better security dog, it's false!
you'll simply have a dog that would attack out fear(if it's brave) or a dog that would leave you and run away from absolutely mundane things(which defeats its purpose as a guard dog)

    AVAILABILITY OF GOOD/PURE BREEDS
German shepherds are one of the most polluted dog breeds around, they have been bred without care, some bad breeders throw caution to the winds and breed the dog recklessly which reduces the dog standard(which drops from generation to generation)
Pure breeds (which trace back to the original straight back gsd) are rare, so it's a little difficult to get a good German shepherd!
With these "polluted" breeds comes different/unpredictable temperaments, genetic disease and all sorts of bad characteristics!

    BONDING
German Shepherds bond very tightly to their owners, usually to the extent that frequent rehoming can cause behavioral problems brought on by insecurity.
If you are considering obtaining a GSD but don’t know what will happen to the dog when you move/get a new job/get married/have children/etc., please don’t get a German Shepherd. (Or any dog, for that matter — wait until your situation becomes stable!) A shepherd can live 10 to 14 years, so you must be prepared to commit to the dog for his lifetime.

    DESTRUCTIVENESS
GSDs need a job, this is not a breed for someone who “just wants a dog.” Your GSD will create his own work if you cannot find work for him! Your GSD can effectively destroy anything he lays his hands on. Chew toys may not suffice, you need to regularly exercise this breed!

THIS TOPIC HAS BEEN ELUDED INTENTIONALLY BY MANY DOG LOVERS,
    IT'S THE BATTLE BETWEEN STRAIGHT-BACKS AND SLANT-BACKS.
I promise to be unbiased and tell the complete truth them! True knowledge of the dogs would help you decide!

NOTE: IF YOU HAVE ANY BREED OF GERMAN SHEPHERD, PURE OR NOT, STRAIGHT-BACK OR SLANT-BACK, TAKE GOOD CARE OF THE DOG, DO NOT DISCRIMINATE, THIS POST IS SIMPLY FOR EDUCATION, NOT TO CONDEMN ANY DOG! IT'S NOT THE DOG'S FAULT, HE WAS SIMPLY BORN LIKE THAT!

This is a touchy subject for gsd owners! Let's puncture this and be done!

    It's finally here!
    Straightback vs slant back!

A brief history before we start!
    4-Horand_von_Grafrath_SZ1_aka_Hektor_Linksrheim-e1424468768617.jpg
The first german shepherd is pictured above, Von Stephanitz found it in a dog show in 1899..
Hektor was the product of few generations of selective breeding and completely fulfilled what Von Stephanitz believed a working dog should be. He was pleased with the strength of the dog and was so taken by the animal’s intelligence, loyalty, and beauty, that he purchased him immediately.
After purchasing the dog he changed his name to Horand von Grafrath and Von Stephanitz founded the Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde (Society for the German Shepherd Dog). Horand was declared to be the first German Shepherd Dog and was the first dog added to the society’s breed register.

As we can all see, this dog is definitely Straightback, what caused the change from Straightback to slant/roach back?
How did straight dogs turn into frog-like creatures?

Americans are not great inventors but they a re great in improving anything by remodeling and reconstructions. They have a very large base to support their system and if cares is not taken, the whole world will easily accept any certified things from America.

Americans believe GSD should have slop without any major reason behind the idea, hence the birth of slope begins and AKC will only register GSD with slope.

Do you know that their law enforcement agencies use straight back GSD and Malinois to fight crime? So how come AKC won't register any GSD except sloppy ones?

Now, I bet most of us would want to know why some of the dogs have slantbacks while others have straight back!

THE QUESTION THAT BAFFLES MOST PEOPLE IS,
HOW DID GERMAN SHEPHERDS GET SUCH SLOPPY BACKS!

    I'll illustrate,
My straightback gsd litters and out of 9 pups, I discover one puppy with a slightly sloped back, because I like those dogs with sloppy backs, I mate that dog with a other dog with sloppy back. This way, their offspring's would have a more curved back, If I continue like that for like 10 generations, I'll have the so called slantback!

The breeders did selective breeding and brought out the slantback from the straightback because they loved the sloppy backed gsd!

There are normal slantbacks and there are some extreme cases that makes you pity the dog 11575574_13701074081_large.jpg

To the conventional pet lover, the answer is no!

Some people think they look better with sloppy backs and show dogs have to look good! That was the main point of its origination!

That's why slantbacks are called "show dogs"
And straight backs are called "working dogs"

I felt really sad for this disformed dog!

This type of back is informally called the banana back!
